CIUT 89.5 FM is the Sound of Success

CIUT 89.5 FM, Canada’s most widely heard campus and community station has just wrapped its 2nd most successful fundraising campaign ever – and Blade is proud to say we helped.

This year’s target of $100,000 was exceeded to an overall total of just over $120,000 by the Sunday, May 12th midnight deadline. The best ever fundraising was back in 2014 when the station appealed to listeners to help replace a malfunctioning transmitter. Listeners back then ponied up just under $120,000.

Reaching this latest lofty goal was a vital step in keeping the station on the air, given Doug Ford’s Student Choice Initiative which has replaced guaranteed student services funding with a choice-based approach. However, some choices have been made for students by Doug and The Gang, including mandatory funding for the U of T Varsity football team. Doug and the Fords do love their football! CIUT was not so lucky.

The new Conservative government’s initiative will put the squeeze on many campus student services including the Student Union and other important programs and services including food banks, support for minority student groups, women’s support services, the Varsity newspaper and CIUT 89.5 FM radio – Canada’s largest campus and community radio station.

“We’re not happy about Ford’s unilateral and badly timed dictate but we decided the best option was to appeal to our listeners,” said Station Manager and Program Director Ken Stowar. “And our listeners came through as they always have with a record-breaking fundraising total!”

Blade’s Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Wayne Son Roberts, who sites on CIUT’s Board of Directors as Vice President, took to the airwaves to help out on Thursday, May 9th. Sharing the airtime on John Valenteyn’s Blues show, they collectively raised 30% more than last year and had a blast doing it.

“Being live on air with John and seeing an increase in donations when compared to past efforts was a real honour. Glad to help out for this great station that I listen to pretty much every day,” said Roberts. “And I didn’t swear on air once the whole time … which was fucking awesome!”

In addition to the on-air appearance, Blade will be developing an awareness campaign for the station that you’ll soon see across the city.
